Maryland Traffic and Licence Matters

Maryland separates what a court does from what the Motor Vehicle Administration does, and a driver can resolve one while the other continues. Points, licence action and administrative hearings are handled by the MVA under its own rules and on its own schedule. Law Offices Of SRIS, P.C. handles these matters. Call (888) 437-7747.

Court and MVA Are Different Tracks

A conviction entered in the District Court is reported to the MVA, which then applies its own consequences including points against the driving record and, at defined thresholds, licence action. Because those follow the conviction rather than the fine, paying a citation to make it go away accepts consequences that were never discussed in the courtroom. Establishing what a charge carries administratively belongs in the decision about how to plead.

Some Charges Are More Than Citations

Several matters that arrive looking like traffic charges carry greater exposure. Driving while suspended, fleeing and eluding, and charges arising from a collision that caused injury or death are handled very differently from an ordinary moving violation. Reading the citation to establish what has actually been charged is the first step, because the label a driver assumes is frequently not the charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I just pay the citation?

Paying is a guilty plea, and the MVA then applies points and any resulting licence consequence. Establish what the charge carries before treating payment as the simple option.

Where is my case heard?

In the District Court of Maryland for the county where the citation was issued, not where you live. That is why a stop while travelling can produce a court date some distance from home.

I am licensed in another state. Does this follow me?

Maryland reports dispositions to the licensing state, and what that state does with the information is governed by its own rules rather than by Maryland law. Raise it early because it can affect which resolution is preferable.
